Pilot Night has always been one of our most popular events of the year, and has been increasingly so over the past few years. The venue for this event has always been the Pilots’ facility at the mouth of PortMiami with a spectacular view of Biscayne Bay and Miami. Because of the tremendous response Pilot Night has had, in 2017 we finally reached the full capacity of attendees that the Pilots’ facility could comfortably handle. As a result, the decision was made by the Pilots that the event take place at a different venue at PortMiami – Cruise Terminal J. The decision was a sound one, as a record number of attendees registered with a near-record attendance. For Pilot Night 2018, Captain Jonathan Nitkin, Chairman of the Biscayne Bay Pilots’ Association, gave a most informative presentation of the “first of it’s kind” Deep Dredge PortMiami Squat Study. PortMiami is the first port to have actually surveyed the giant Panamax container ships as they entered our Outer Bar Cut Channel from sea so we could measure how much these vessels actually squat in relation to our rock bottom. The results of these surveys were included in Captain Nitkin’s presentation.
